The Island of St. Giorgio Maggiore
circa 1865
The most prominent feature of the island is the **Church of San Giorgio Maggiore**, designed by the renowned architect **Andrea Palladio**. This church, built between 1566 and 1610, is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, with a neoclassical façade and a large central nave. It is considered one of Palladio's finest works and stands as an iconic example of Venetian Renaissance architecture.
In addition to the church, the island is home to a monastery, which was originally established in the 8th century. Over time, the monastery complex evolved, and today, the island is also known for the **Cini Foundation**, a cultural institution dedicated to the preservation and promotion of art and culture.
The island offers some of the best panoramic views of Venice, including the **Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute** and the **Doge's Palace**, and is accessible by vaporetto (water bus) from various points in Venice. Its peaceful atmosphere, combined with its rich history and striking architecture, makes **San Giorgio Maggiore** a beloved and serene part of the Venetian landscape.
