Abraham Lincoln, Allan Pinkerton, and John A. McClernand

Spy, President, and General

From left to right: North Intelligence Chief Allan Pinkerton, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, and Northern Army General John A. McClernand poses for a photographer at a Northerner camp shortly after the Battle of Antietam, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, September 1862. The Battle of Antietam went down in the records as the bloodiest one-day battle of the American Civil War and dispelled the myth of Southern invincibility. Britain and France, which were discussing the prospects for diplomatic recognition of the Confederate States of America, decided to postpone the recognition of the Confederates after the victory of the Northerners at Antitham.
