13 inch mortar Dictator

David Knox, September 1, 1864

The 13-inch Mortar "Dictator" was a massive Civil War-era siege weapon used by the Union Army. It was a 13-inch seacoast mortar mounted on a specially reinforced railroad flatcar, allowing it to be transported and fired from railway tracks. This innovative design provided mobility and a stable firing platform, making it an effective artillery piece during the Siege of Petersburg (1864–1865).

The Dictator could fire 200-pound explosive shells over 2 miles (3.2 km), bombarding Confederate fortifications with devastating force. Despite its firepower, the mortar had limitations, including slow reload times and the immense stress its recoil placed on the flatcar.

Though not widely used, the Dictator became one of the most famous artillery pieces of the Civil War, symbolizing the Union’s industrial might and tactical ingenuity.
