Portrait of Ernst Haeckel
World war
The German naturalist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel, the famous author of the terms “ecology” and “Pithecanthropus”, also wrote his name in history by first using the term “World War” in the press. The American newspaper Indianapolis Star quoted Haeckel on September 20, 1914: “There is no doubt that the course and nature of the terrible European War... will become World War I in the full sense of the word.” A letter sent by Haeckel to his nephew Conrad Huschka in 1916 has also been preserved: “England bears the main responsibility for starting this terrible world war with terrible losses,” the scientist wrote.
The article is illustrated by a portrait of Ernst Haeckel taken by German photographer Nicola Perscheid in Berlin in 1904.
