Lower Clifton Street

A steep climb through the Yorkshire hills and everyday Edwardian life

This evocative photograph from around 1900 shows Lower Clifton Street in the hillside village of Triangle, nestled in the Calder Valley of West Yorkshire. Cobbled streets, sturdy stone houses and a sharp incline set the scene, while a man stands beside his horse-drawn cart at the foot of the hill—likely a local grocer or deliveryman. A cyclist pushes upwards, emphasising the steep gradient and the hard-working rhythm of rural Yorkshire life.

These terraces were home to weavers, millworkers and families whose lives revolved around the booming textile industry of the Upper Calder Valley, where stone mills and tall chimneys (just visible in the background) transformed quiet hamlets into industrious communities.

🗓️ Did you know? By 1900, Calderdale’s textile trade was exporting cloth around the world, and villages like Triangle were crucial links in that industrial chain.
