On this day in history. On August 21, 1911, Vincenzo Perugia, 30, who worked at the Louvre Museum in Paris, stole the famous painting by Italian artist Leonardo Da Vinci, “La Gioconda”, which, according to the kidnapper, he was going to return to the artists homeland. The “Theft of the Century” was discovered two years later when Perugia tried to sell a painting in Florence to a local antiquarian.
