“The Doctor’s Visit”

“The Doctor’s Visit” — Dorset, England, April 1906

This remarkable postcard captures a scene from rural Dorset, in the area of Bulbarrow, offering a glimpse into a largely forgotten world of early 20th-century countryside life.

The image shows Doctor Fielding and Nurse Marlowe attending a birth among a traveling gypsy family. The mother, Lavinia Hughes, lies inside a small tent while the medical attendants assist with the delivery. The newborn would become one of seventeen children born to Lavinia and her husband Arthur Hughes, known locally as a “rat-and-varmint destroyer,” a traditional rural occupation focused on pest control.

Scenes like this illustrate how medical care often had to reach people wherever they lived — even in temporary camps far from villages or towns.
