This photograph from 1986 shows a small food stall at the VDNKh National Exhibition complex in Moscow. The sign above the kiosk, written in Cyrillic, advertises simple refreshments: “Sausages, Coffee, Juices.”

Two young women stand at a high outdoor table drinking hot beverages and eating a quick snack, dressed in winter coats and hats against the cold Moscow weather. Scenes like this were common around the exhibition grounds, where visitors could stop for inexpensive food while walking through the vast complex.

VDNKh (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy) was one of the most important public exhibition sites in the Soviet Union. Opened in 1939, it was designed to showcase Soviet industry, agriculture, science and technological achievements. Over time it also became a popular public space with pavilions, fountains, parks and numerous small kiosks selling food and drinks.

The modest menu visible in the sign reflects the simple, practical street food typical of late-Soviet urban life: sausages served hot, basic coffee and fruit juices.

Today the VDNKh complex remains one of Moscow’s major public spaces, but photographs like this capture the everyday atmosphere of the Soviet Union during its final decade.
