John Hope (1807-1893) was a Scottish lawyer, philanthropist and campaigner. He used his wealth and influence to improve the lives of working-class people in Edinburgh, mainly by providing free education and promoting temperance. He was also a leader of the anti-Catholic movement in Britain. He left his estate to a charitable trust that still exists today
